भारत का राष्ट्रीय पशु बाघ है। बाघ शब्द संस्कृत के व्याघ्र का तद्भव रूप है। इसका वैज्ञानिक नाम पेंथेरा टाइग्रिस है। इसका शरीर काफी मजबूत होता है। बाघ का संबंध बिल्ली के परिवार से होता है। बाघ का रंग पीला, हल्का भूरा होता है, जिस पर काली धारियां होती हैं। इसकी पूंछ लंबी होती है। इसके चार पैर होते हैं। इसके दांत बड़े एवं पैने होते हैं। इसके पंजों में नुकीले नाखून होते हैं। यह 7 फीट की ऊंचाई तक छलांग लगा सकता है।
पुराणों में इसे शक्ति का प्रतीक माना गया है। वन्य जीवों पर अनुसंधान करने वालों के अनुसार बाघ बहुत समझदार और शातिर किस्म का वन्य प्राणी है। किसी जमाने में इसे अपना निशाना बनाना शिकारियों के लिए बहुत बड़ी चुनौती हुआ करती थी। इसकी समझदारी का अंदाजा इसी बात से लगाया जा सकता है कि थोड़ा-सा भी खतरे का अहसास होने पर यह अपने दैनिक मार्ग को भी बदल लेता है।
पूरे विश्व में इनकी कुल संख्या छह हजार है, जिसमें 4 हजार तो भारत में ही हैं। दिनों दिन घटती संख्या के कारण भारत में बाघ का शिकार भारत सरकार द्वारा प्रतिबंधित कर दिया गया है। अप्रैल 1973 में प्रोजेक्ट टाइगर (बाघ परियोजना शुरू की गई थी। इसके परिणाम सामने आए हैं। अब इनकी संख्या में वृद्धि हुई है।
तिब्बत, श्रीलंका और अंडमान निकोबार द्वीप समूह को छोड़कर एशिया के अन्य सभी भागों में बाघ पाया जाता है। यह भारत, नेपाल, भूटान, कोरिया, अफगानिस्तान और इंडोनेशिया में अधिक संख्या में पाया जाता है। यह 13 फोट लंबा और 300 किलो वजनी हो सकता है। बाघ को वन, दलदली क्षेत्र तथा पास के मैदानों के पास रहना पसंद है। इसका आहार मुख्य रूप से सांभर, चीतल, जंगली सूअर, जंगली भैंसा एवं हिरण इत्यादि है।

Due to the decreasing numbers day by day, tiger hunting in India has been banned by the Government of India. Project Tiger (Tiger Project was started in April 1973. Its results are visible. The tiger is found in all other parts of Asia except Tibet, Sri Lanka, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It is found in greater numbers in India, Nepal, Bhutan, Korea, Afghanistan, and Indonesia. It can be 13 feet long and weigh 300 kg. The tiger likes to live near forests, marshy areas, and nearby plains. Its diet is mainly sambar, chital, wild boar, wild buffalo, and deer, etc.
