आत्मनिर्भरता का अर्थ है- अपने ऊपर निर्भर रहना। जो व्यक्ति किसी काम को करने के लिए दूसरों के मुंह नहीं ताकते, वे ही आत्मनिर्भर कहलाते हैं। आत्मनिर्भरता मनुष्य का बहुत बड़ा गुण है। आत्मविश्वास के बल पर अर्थात् किसी का सहारा लिए बिना अपने बलबूते पर कार्य करते रहना ही आत्मनिर्भरता है। यह सभी गुणों का आधार है।
आत्मनिर्भरता का अर्थ है-स्वयं की, समाज की निज तथा राष्ट्र की आवश्यकताओं की पूर्ति करना व्यक्ति, समाज तथा राष्ट्र में आत्मविश्वास की भावना आत्मनिर्भरता का प्रतीक है। स्वावलंबन ही व्यक्ति, समाज और राष्ट्र के जीवन में सर्वांगीण उन्नति का आधार है। जब बच्चा छोटा होता है, तो वह पूर्णतया अपनी मां पर आश्रित होता है।
वह अपने हाथों का प्रयोग करना नहीं जानता, परंतु धीरे-धीरे वह हाथों का प्रयोग करना सीख लेता है। वह अपने हाथों से चीजों को उठाता और खाता है। ऐसा करने से उसे परम सुख प्राप्त होता है। अब वह अपने पैरों पर खड़ा होकर जहां चाहे घूम सकता है। इसी तरह स्वावलंबन के अन्य कई उदाहरण देखने को मिलते हैं।
पेड़-पौधों और पशु-पक्षियों में तो स्वावलंबन कूट-कूटकर भरा होता है। वे अपना भोजन स्वयं बनाते हैं। सूर्य से प्रकाश, चंद्रमा से रस और आकाश से जल प्राप्त कर पौधे स्वतः बढ़ते चले जाते हैं। वे इन चीजों के लिए किसी की खुशामद नहीं करते।
पशु-पक्षी भी जरा से बड़े हुए नहीं कि निकल पड़ते हैं अपने भोजन की तलाश में देखने में आया है कि स्वावलंबन का पाठ सिखाते समय ये बहुत सख्त हो जाते हैं। यहां तक कि चींटी जैसा नन्हा-सा जीव भी हमें स्वाभिमान से जीवन जीना सिखाता है। क्या हमें अपने भीतर ही इस सत्य का अनुभव नहीं होता है कि जब ईश्वर ने हममें सारी क्षमताएं दी हैं, तो हम क्यों न उनका प्रयोग करें, अर्थात् अपने पैरों पर हम स्वयं क्यों न चलें।

Self-reliance means being dependent on yourself. The person who does not look at the faces of others to do any work is called self-reliant. Self-reliance is a great quality of man. Self-reliance is the only way to keep working on the strength of self-confidence, that is, on one’s own strength without resorting to anyone. It is the basis of all virtues.
Self-reliance means – to fulfill the needs of self, society, and the nation, the feeling of self-confidence in the individual, society, and nation is a symbol of self-reliance. Self-reliance is the basis of all-around progress in the life of individuals, society, and nations. When a child is small, he is completely dependent on his mother.
He does not know how to use his hands, but gradually he learns to use his hands. He picks up and eats things with his hands. By doing this, he gets ultimate happiness. Now he can stand on his feet and roam wherever he wants. Similarly, there are many other examples of self-reliance.
There is self-reliance in trees and plants and animals and birds. They make their own food. Plants grow on their own after receiving light from the sun, juice from the moon, and water from the sky. They do not please anyone for these things.
Even the animals and birds have not grown up in the slightest that they go out in search of their food, it has been seen that while teaching the lesson of self-reliance, they become very strict. Even a small creature like an ant teaches us to live life with self-respect. Do we not realize this truth within ourselves that when God has given all the abilities in us, then why should we not use them, that is, why should we not walk on our own feet?
