गंगा नदी भारत की प्राचीन नदियों में से एक है और इसका अपना एक इतिहास है। इसे सब भारतीयों की आस्था के एक प्रतीक रूप में स्वीकार किया जाता है, इसलिए यह मानो जीवंत आस्था ही है। यह नदी हिमालय की गोद गोमुख से निकल कर मैदानी इलाकों में आती है।
पुराणों की मान्यता है कि भगवान श्रीविष्णु के पैर के अंगूठे से निकलने के कारण यह परम पवित्र है। पहले यह स्वर्ग में बहती थी। कठोर तप करके महाराज भगीरथी इसे पृथ्वी लोक पर लाए, इसीलिए इसका एक नाम भागीरथी है। भगीरथ ने अपने कुल के साठ हजार राख बन गए सगर-पुत्रों को इसके स्पर्श से मुक्त किया था।
नदियों का हमारे जीवन में बहुत महत्त्व है, क्योंकि इन नदियों से ही भूमि उपजाऊ बनती है। इसके अलावा इन नदियों के पानी से हमारी दिनचर्या भी पूरी होती है, जैसे कि पीने के लिए, नहाने के लिए, पेड़-पौधों के लिए, जीव जंतुओं के लिए जल की आपूर्ति। भारत में गंगा को गंगा मईया’ इस नाम से भी पुकारा जाता है. परंतु अब यह नदी प्रदूषित हो गई है। आज के समय में गंगा को मैली करने में हम सबका बहुत योगदान है। शहर की सारी गंदगी और कारखानों से निकलने वाले जहरीले पदार्थ भी इस नदी में बहा दिए जाते हैं। इसीलिए अब इस गंगा नदी का पानी पीने लायक नहीं रहा है।
सरकारी और कई गैर सरकारी संस्थाएं इसे साफ करने के कई उपाय कर रही हैं। प्रत्येक वर्ष इसे साफ करने के लिए लाखों-अरबों रुपए खर्च किए जाते हैं, परंतु इसकी स्थिति में कोई सुधार नहीं दिख रहा है। अगर इस नदी का यही हाल रहा तो एक दिन इस नदी का पानी पूरी तरह से प्रदूषित हो जाएगा।
क्या यह सच नहीं है कि मां का ध्यान उसकी संतान नहीं रखेगी, तो भला कौन रखेगा। और फिर पूजा से ही बात नहीं बनती है, सेवा का, देखरेख का, संभाल का अपना विशेष महत्त्व होता है। इसलिए हम सबको प्रण लेना चाहिए। की हम इसे साफ रखने में अपना पूरा योगदान देंगे।

Rivers are very important in our life because it is only from these rivers that the land becomes fertile. If the condition of this river continues, then one day the water of this river will be completely polluted.
