भारत का राष्ट्रीय प्रतीक अशोक सारनाथ स्थित अशोक के सिंह स्तंभ से लिया गया है। सारनाथ भारत देश के उत्तर प्रदेश राज्य के वाराणसी के निकट है। यह राज चिन्ह सारनाथ के संग्रहालय में सुरक्षित है।
भारत के राष्ट्रीय प्रतीक में चार एशियाई शेर एक दूसरे के विपरीत दिशा में चारों दिशाओं को सुरक्षात्मक मुद्रा में हैं। भारत सरकार द्वारा 1950 में अंगीकृत किए गए राष्ट्रीय प्रतीक में मात्र तीन शेर ही दिखाई देते हैं, चौथा शेर छिपा हुआ है। इसके नीचे घंटे के आकार के पद्म के ऊपर एक चित्र वल्लरी में एक हाथी, चौकड़ी भरता हुआ एक घोड़ा. एक सांड तथा एक सिंह की उभरी हुई मूर्ति है। इसके बीचोबीच में चक्र बने हैं।
एक ही पत्थर को काटकर बनाए गए इस सिंह भारत के प्रतीक के नीचे आदर्श वाक्य देवनागरी लिपि में ‘सत्यमेव जयते’ लिखा हुआ है जिसका अर्थ है सत्य की सदा ही जीत होती है। यह उक्ति मुंडक उपनिषद् से ली गई है। ऐसा कहना भी युक्तिसंगत होगा कि यह हमारे भारत का अहिंसा और सत्य का प्रतीक भी है।स्तंभ के ऊपर ‘धर्मचक्र’ रखा हुआ है।

The National Emblem of India Ashoka is derived from the Lion Pillar of Ashoka at Sarnath. Sarnath is located near Varanasi in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. This royal symbol is preserved in the museum of Sarnath.
The national emblem of India has four Asiatic lions facing each other in a protective posture in all four directions.
