अनुशासन क्या है-अनुशास्यते अनेन इति अनुशासनम् । अर्थात् स्वयं का स्वयं पर शासन, अनुशासन शब्द अनुशासन इन दो शब्दों से मिलकर बना है अर्थात् किन्हीं निश्चित नियमों का पालन अपने ऊपर स्वयं शासन करना तथा शासन के अनुसार अपने जीवन को चलाना इन दो बातों को अलग-अलग समझना बहुत जरूरी है। शासन के मूल में भय की भावना कार्य करती है. जबकि अनुशासन में अपने और दूसरों के हित की भावना छिपी होती है।
अनुशासन राष्ट्रीय जीवन के लिए बेहद जरूरी है। यदि प्रशासन, स्कूल, समाज और परिवार सभी जगह सब लोग अनुशासन में रहेंगे और अपने कर्तव्य का पालन करेंगे, अपनी जिम्मेदारी समझेंगे तो कहीं किसी प्रकार की गड़बड़ी या अशांति नहीं होगी। नियम तोड़ने से ही अनुशासनहीनता बढ़ती है तथा समाज में अव्यवस्था पैदा होती है।
अनुशासन का पाठ बचपन से परिवार में रहकर सीखा जाता है। विद्यालय जाकर अनुशासन की भावना का विकास होता है। अच्छी शिक्षा विद्यार्थी को अनुशासन का पालन करना सिखाती है सच्चा अनुशासन ही मनुष्य को पशु से ऊपर उठाकर वास्तव में मानव बनाता है। भय से अनुशासन का पालन करना सच्चा अनुशासन नहीं है और न हो अनुशासन पराधीनता है। यह सामाजिक तथा राष्ट्रीय स्तर की एक महत्त्वपूर्ण आवश्यकता है।
देश में व्याप्त तमाम समस्याओं के निराकरण के लिए देश के प्रत्येक नागरिक को अनुशासनप्रिय होना चाहिए। अनुशासन प्रिय होने के लिए हमें स्वप्रेरणा के आधार पर कार्य करना होगा। इसी को आत्मानुशासन कहते हैं।
अनुशासन से अभिप्राय नियम, सिद्धांत तथा आदेशों का पालन करना है। जीवन को आदर्श तरीके से जीने के लिए अनुशासन में रहना आवश्यक है। इस प्रकार अनुशासन का अर्थ है, खुद को वश में रखना।
