भारत का राष्ट्रीय फल आम है। हिंदू धर्म ग्रंथों में आम को अत्यंत पवित्र माना गया है। शुभ कर्मों में आम के पत्तों की बंदनवार बनाकर उसे मुख्य द्वार पर लगाया जाता है। इसी तरह कलश पर आम के पत्तों को रखा जाता है। यज्ञ और पूजा करने वाले भक्त इसके पत्तों से अपने चारों ओर जल छिड़ककर स्थान विशेष को पवित्र करते हैं।
बसंत पंचमी के दिन जब मां सरस्वती का पूजन किया जाता है, तब आम की बौर (फूल) को विशेष रूप से चढ़ाया जाता है। यज्ञ-हवन आदि में आम की लकड़ी (समिधा) को अत्यंत पवित्र माना जाता है। शांति कर्म के लिए किए जाने वाले यज्ञ में आम की समिधा का विशेष महत्व है।
यह एक गूदेदार फल होता है, जो वैज्ञानिक दृष्टि से मैग्नीफेरा नामक प्रजाति से संबंधित होता है। आम में विटामिन ए, सी एवं डी होता है, इसीलिए इसे फलों का राजा भी कहते हैं।
आम का वृक्ष एक फलदार बड़ा स्थलीय वृक्ष है। इसमें दो बीजपत्र होते हैं। इसके फल छोटे-छोटे एवं समूह में रहते हैं। आम के फूलों को ‘मंजरी’ कहते हैं। इसकी पत्ती सरल, लंबो एवं भाले के समान होती है। इसका तना लंबा एवं मजबूत होता है। इसका फल एक गुठली वाला और गूदेदार होता है। भारत में आम की सौ से भी अधिक किस्में उपलब्ध हैं जैसे दशहरी, लंगड़ा, चौसा, फजली, मुंबई ग्रीन, मुंबई अलफाजों, बैंगन पल्ली, हिम सागर, केशर, किशन भोग, नीलम, आम्रपाली इत्यादि। आम विभिन्न रंगों, आकारों एवं आकृतियों के होते हैं। इसकी पैदावार भारत में अति प्राचीन समय से होती आयी है। लोग आम को काटकर, चूसकर खाते हैं, अचार और चटनी के रूप में भी लोग इसका प्रयोग करते हैं। लू से बचने और हाजमे के लिए शरबत के रूप में भी इसका प्रयोग होता है।

There are more than a hundred varieties of mangoes available in India like Dussehri, Langra, Chausa, Fazli, Mumbai Green, Mumbai Alphazon, Baingan Palli, Him Sagar, Keshar, Kishan Bhog, Neelam, Amrapali, etc. Mangoes are of various colors, sizes, and shapes. It has been cultivated in India since time immemorial. People eat mango by cutting, sucking it, people also use it in the form of pickles and chutney. It is also used in the form of sherbet to avoid heatstroke and digestion.
