महात्मा गांधी को ब्रिटिश शासन के खिलाफ भारतीय राष्ट्रीय आंदोलन के अग्रणी नेता के रूप में स्वीकार किया जाता है। इन्हें ‘राष्ट्रपिता’ के सम्मान से नवाजा जाता है। इनका पूरा नाम मोहनदास करमचंद गांधी था। महात्मा गांधी का जन्म 2 अक्टूबर, 1869 को गुजरात के पोरबंदर नामक स्थान पर हुआ था। इनके पिता का नाम करमचंद गांधी था। मोहनदास गांधी की माता का नाम पुतलीबाई था, जो करमचंद गांधी की चौथी पत्नी थीं। मोहनदास अपनी माता की अंतिम संतान थे।
मोहनदास गांधी की माता पुतलीबाई अत्यधिक धार्मिक थीं। मोहनदास का लालन-पालन एक वैष्णव परिवार में हुआ था। लेकिन इन पर जैन धर्म का भी गहरा प्रभाव था। इसलिए इन्होंने स्वाभाविक रूप से अहिंसा, शाकाहार, आत्मशुद्धि के लिए उपवास और विभिन्न पंथों को मानने वालों के बीच परस्पर सहिष्णुता को अपनाया।
मोहनदास एक औसत विद्यार्थी थे। ये पढ़ाई और खेल दोनों में ही औसत थे। बीमार पिता की सेवा करना, घरेलू कामों में मां का हाथ बंटाना और समय मिलने पर दूर तक अकेले सैर पर निकलना इन्हें पसंद था। उन्हीं के शब्दों में ‘मैंने बड़ों की आज्ञा का पालन करना सीखा।’
वकालत पढ़ने के लिए ये विदेश गए। इस यात्रा ने इनके सोचने के तरीके को बदला दिया। यहां इन्होंने देखा कि गोरे कैसे रंगभेद को लेकर पक्षपात करते हैं। यहीं उन्होंने देश को आजाद करने का संकल्प लिया। गांधी जी द्वारा लड़ी गई आजादी की अहिंसक लड़ाई के सामने अंग्रेजों को घुटने टेकने पड़े।
भारत आजाद हो गया। प्रार्थना से आते हुए गांधी जी की नाथूराम गोडसे ने 30 जनवरी, 1948 को गोली मारकर हत्या कर दी। वे आज शरीर रूप से हमारे बीच नहीं हैं, लेकिन सत्य-अहिंसा का उनकादर्शन आज भी समूची मानवता का मार्गदर्शन कर रहा है।

Mahatma Gandhi is acknowledged as the foremost leader of the Indian national movement against British rule. He is honored with the honor of ‘Father of the Nation’. His full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, at a place called Porbandar in Gujarat. His father’s name was Karamchand Gandhi. Mohandas Gandhi’s mother’s name was Putlibai, who was the fourth wife of Karamchand Gandhi. Mohandas was the last child of his mother.
Mohandas Gandhi’s mother Putlibai was highly religious. Mohandas was brought up in a Vaishnava family. But Jainism also had a deep influence on them. So they naturally adopted non-violence, vegetarianism, fasting for self-purification, and mutual tolerance among the followers of different sects.
Mohandas was an average student. He was average in both studies and sports. He liked to serve a sick father, help his mother in household chores and go on long walks alone when he got time. In his own words, ‘I learned to obey the orders of the elders.’
He went abroad to study law. This journey changed his way of thinking. Here he saw how whites were biased against apartheid. It was here that he resolved to liberate the country. The British had to kneel in front of the non-violent freedom struggle fought by Gandhiji.
India became independent. Gandhiji was shot dead by Nathuram Godse on 30 January 1948 while coming from prayer. He is no longer with us physically, but his philosophy of truth-non-violence is guiding the entire humanity even today.
