संस्कृति शब्द ऐसे दो शब्दों से मिलकर बना है, जो प्रायः एक साथ युग्म रूप में प्रयुक्त होते हैं और इन्हें समानार्थक मान लिया जाता है। लेकिन दोनों में अंतर है। दोनों ही शब्दों की विभिन्न विद्वानों ने कई परिभाषाएं दी हैं। लेकिन सीधे सामान्य तौर पर कहें तो संस्कृति का सीधा संबंध संस्कारों से होता है।
संस्कार वो गुणबीज होता है, जिसे व्यक्ति अपने परिवार, समाज, जाति अथवा अपने समूह से विरासत के रूप में पीढ़ी-दर-पीढ़ी प्राप्त करता है तथा जो उस के आंतरिक व्यक्तित्व, गुण, आचार-विचार और सहज स्वभाव के रूप में जाने-अनजाने परिलक्षित होता है।
जब शिष्य अपनी शिक्षा समाप्त कर लेता है, तो गुरु उसे दीक्षा देते हैं. जिसे आजकल आप ग्रेजुएशन सेरेमनी कहते हैं। गुरु पहला सूत्र देते हैं-मातृ देवो भव, पितृ देवो भव, आचार्य देवो भव तथा अतिथि देवो भव।
इसका अर्थ है-माता को देवस्वरूप मानो, पिता को देवस्वरूप मानो, गुरु को देवस्वरूप मानो और अतिथि को देवस्वरूप मानो। पश्चिमी देशों में फादर डे और मदर डे अलग-अलग मनाए जाते हैं। इसमें केवल माता और पिता का नाम है, जबकि उपनिषद् के सूत्र में गुरु और अतिथि का भी नाम दिया गया है। यहां चारों ही में देवता समान हैं।
इसके आगे ऋषि कहते हैं-सत्यं वद, धर्म चर अर्थात् सत्य बोलो और धर्म का आचरण करो। आगे सत्य और धर्म के विषय में कहा गया है।
सत्यं ब्रूयात्, प्रियं ब्रूयात् मा ब्रूयात् सत्यमप्रियम् । प्रियं च नानृतं ब्रूयादेष धर्म सनातनः।।
अर्थात् सत्य बोलो, प्रिय बोलो यानी मीठा बोलो, लेकिन कभी कड़वा सत्य मत बोलो तथा न ही प्रिय लगने वाला झूठ-यही सनातन धर्म है।
सत्य के प्रति आस्था, सत्य का जीवन में आचरण तथा इस परम सत्य को स्वीकार करना कि ‘हम सब एक हैं’ भारतीय संस्कृति का मूल मंत्र है।

It contains only the names of the mother and father, whereas the sutras of the Upanishads also mention the names of the guru and the guest. Here all the gods are equal.
Next to this, the sages say – Satyam Vad, Dharma Chara, that is, speak the truth and practice righteousness. Further, it has been said about truth and dharma.
सत्यं ब्रूयात्, प्रियं ब्रूयात् मा ब्रूयात् सत्यमप्रियम् । प्रियं च नानृतं ब्रूयादेष धर्म सनातनः।।
That is, speak the truth, speak dear, that is, speak sweet, but never speak the bitter truth, nor a lie that is dear to you – this is Sanatan Dharma.
Belief in truth, practice of truth in life and acceptance of this ultimate truth that ‘we are all one’ is the basic mantra of Indian culture.
