भारत त्योहारों का देश है। इनमें दीपपर्व-दीपावली का अपना विशेष महत्त्व है। दीपावली हिंदुओं का सबसे बड़ा त्योहार है। यह पूरे भारत में मनाया जाता है। दीपावली ‘दीप+अवली’ इन दो शब्दों से मिलकर बना है. जिसका अर्थ है-दीपों की पंक्ति। यह त्योहार कार्तिक मास की अमावस्या को मनाया जाता है।
हिंदू परिवारों में इस दिन शुभ और लाभ के लिए लक्ष्मी गणेश का विशेष रूप से पूजन किया जाता है। इस त्योहार को मनाने के अनेक कारण हैं। एक मान्यता के अनुसार, इस दिन श्रीराम लंका पर विजय प्राप्त करने के बाद जब अयोध्या वापस लौटे थे. तब लोगों ने अपने घरों में दीप जलाकर और मिठाइयां बांटकर खुशियां मनाई थीं।
एक अन्य मान्यता के अनुसार, धन की देवी लक्ष्मी इसी दिन दैत्यराज महाराज बलि से मुक्त हुई थीं। जैन धर्म को मानने वाले इसे ‘मोक्ष-दिवस’ के रूप में मनाते हैं, क्योंकि इसी दिन उनके 24वें तीर्थंकर महावीर स्वामी का महानिर्वाण हुआ था। सिख धर्म के अनुयायी इसे ‘बंदी छोड़ दिवस’ के रूप में मनाते हैं।
स्वामी रामतीर्थ का भी संबंध इस पर्व के साथ कुछ विशेष ही है। इन्हें अपना आदर्श मानने वालों के अनुसार, क्योंकि स्वामी रामतीर्थ के जन्म, संन्यास और महानिर्वाण की घटनाएं इसी दीपपर्व पर हुई थीं इसीलिए वे इसे ‘राम-दिवस’ के रूप में मनाते हैं। इसी दिन आर्य समाज के प्रवर्तक में स्वामी दयानंद ने भी अपने शरीर का त्याग किया था। विभिन्न धर्मो संप्रदायों से जुड़े होने के कारण यह त्योहार भारत ही नहीं, समूचे विश्व में धूमधाम से मनाया जाता है।
दीपावली वर्षा ऋतु की समाप्ति पर आती है। वर्षा ऋतु में कीटाणु घरों में अपना घर बना लेते हैं। इसी बहाने लोग वर्ष भर में घर की एक बार पूरी सफाई करते हैं। घरों में सफेदी कराई जाती है, दरवाजे और खिड़किया रंग-रोगन से चमक उठते हैं। इस पर्व में घर-घर बनी रंगोलियां देखते ही बनती हैं। दीपावली खुशियों तथा हर्ष का त्योहार है।

In Hindu families, Lakshmi Ganesh is specially worshiped on this day for auspiciousness and benefits. There are many reasons to celebrate this festival. According to a belief, it is on this day when Shri Ram returned to Ayodhya after conquering Lanka. Then people celebrated happiness in their homes by lighting lamps and distributing sweets.
According to another belief, Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, was freed from the demon king’s sacrifice on this day. The followers of Jainism celebrate it as ‘Moksha-Day’, because on this day their 24th Tirthankara Mahavir Swami’s Mahanirvana took place. Followers of Sikhism celebrate it as ‘Bandi Chhor Divas.
The relation of Swami Ramtirtha is also something special with this festival. According to those who consider them as their ideal, because the events of Swami Ramtirtha’s birth, sannyasa, and Mahanirvana took place on this lamp, hence they celebrate it as ‘Ram-Day’. On this day, Swami Dayanand, the founder of Arya Samaj, also gave up his body. Due to being associated with different religions and sects, this festival is celebrated with pomp not only in India but all over the world.
Diwali comes at the end of the rainy season. In the rainy season, germs make their home in houses. On this pretext, people do a complete cleaning of the house once a year. The houses are whitewashed, the doors and windows are gleaming with paint. In this festival, house-made rangolis are made on sight. Diwali is a festival of happiness and joy.
